4th prize in the invited competition/study commission: Our proposed new footbridge and cycle bridge over the Rhine is a 140-metre-long suspension bridge with two slender double masts and a main span of 125 metres. Its lightweight cable construction differs significantly from the massive existing road bridge and clearly identifies its function as a connection for slow traffic. The filigrane structure made of efficient steel profiles enables economical, sustainable construction without interfering with the riverbed, which does not impair the flow and minimises flood risks.
The bridge creates a new landmark between Ruggell Lichtenstein and Sennwald in the Swiss canton of St. Gallen. The two places are separated by the Rhine and the A13 motorway and previously connected only by the existing road bridge. As heavy motorised traffic severely restricts pedestrian and bicycle traffic there, the new bridge significantly improves the safety and quality of the routes. At the same time, it blends harmoniously into the landscape characterised by dams and the existing bridge and offers an attractive, safe crossing of the Rhine exclusively for slow traffic.
DGJ Paysages was involved in the integral design concept from the outset, designing the bridge and integrating it into the landscape, as well as designing the access bike- and footpaths and the surrounding area with picnic areas and planting.
The filigrane structure, which spans the Rhine with minimal use of materials and without intermediate supports, impressed the jury at first glance in terms of aesthetics and sustainability. ... Overall, the jury describes the project as an interesting design (jury report of 14 October 2025). In the evaluation process, however, it preferred the simple ‘Libelle’ box beam bridge designed by a team from south-eastern Switzerland and Ticino. We warmly congratulate our colleagues at Masotti & Ass. , Pini Group, Orsi & Ass. and LAND from Bellinzona, Chur and Lugano.
