Conversion of catering space to enlarge a hotel with 17 double rooms AIT Hotel Application Award 2010 | Kategorie Best Hotel Room German Design Award 2014 Nominee Berlin’s Sperlingsgasse was established in 1968 as an artificially-created pub and bar alleyway within a new, building structure. 2010 we converted the deserted area of the former saloon into 17 new rooms as part of a hotel expansion project. Using sophisticated pieces of furniture, we give the compact room some charm and intelligent details: The cabinet, for example, is not only a cabinet but also a room divider or screen when the door is open. Its upper section serves as a lighting object that accentuates the unbroken feel of the room from its free position. White surfaces, vibrant green, carpets with bold black circle patterns and details in oak wood refer to the era the building was built in and make use of Op Art effects. The consistently dominant black and white contrast characterizes the distinct, refreshing atmosphere of the rooms. The large-format patterns of the floors give the high-ceilinged rooms a proportional counterbalance and create space alone through graphic effect. The classic hotel carpet motif is “resolved” in the hallway: A series of over-sized black circles float as an enticing, animating pathway in linear space. This models the perspective in a figurative, individual and unmistakable way.
