The restoration of a degraded urban site through the creation of a new natural public space. For over 30 years, Valle d’en Joan was used as a landfill for the city of Barcelona, accumulating more than 70 metres of waste. The site later became part of the Garraf Natural Park, creating the need for its closure and ecological restoration.

The project works on two levels: solving the technical problems needed to close the site safely, and designing a landscape that brings back biodiversity. Agricultural methods are used to meet both goals in a single, integrated system.

The agricultural system itself forms the landscape—a clear and logical way to restore life to a damaged site. The land is shaped into terraces, rainwater is collected for irrigation, and native plants are introduced across the fields. This approach also provides practical solutions: it reduces slopes and erosion, directs rainwater to prevent leaks and limit pollution, and allows gases generated in the landfill to be safely released in stages.
