Barcelona – Architecture Studio Session | #01 — BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group
The Architecture Studio Sessions is a captivating series of ten events that is part of the official UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2026 program in Barcelona.
Curated and coordinated by Miriam Giordano, Gaia Pellegrini, and John Hill, leading architecture studios will open their doors to share their workspaces, philosophies, and creative processes across ten engaging sessions. Each event combines architecture with music, featuring playlists curated by the architects themselves to foster connection among all participants in an open cultural format.
Organized by World-Architects and generously sponsored by Laufen, Roca, and Simon, in collaboration with Labóh and L35, the Architecture Studio Sessions promise to be an unforgettable journey of discovery through Barcelona's vibrant architectural landscape.
The Studio
BIG is a group of 800+ architects, designers and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, landscape, interiors, product design, research and development with offices in Copenhagen, New York, London, Barcelona, Shanghai, Zurich, Los Angeles, Oslo, and Bhutan. BIG has created a reputation for completing buildings that are as programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. In our architectural production, we demonstrate a high sensitivity to the particular demands of site, context and program. Working with a wide variety of scales and programs globally, BIG’s projects include Google headquarters in Mountain View, California, USA, and London, UK; the LEGO Brand House in Denmark; a Waste to-Energy plant with a ski slope in Copenhagen; and a masterplan for 16 km of coastal flood resiliency infrastructure along the Manhattan waterfront in New York, USA.
The Space
BIG is located in a two-story studio in the Eixample district, looking out at the vibrant Ronda de Sant Pere thoroughfare. The space was transformed into the new home of BIGs BCNsters in 2023. To preserve the historic character of the space, the building’s original features were uncovered, exposing the brick walls, the vaulted ceilings, and the cast-iron columns. At ground level, the intricate mosaic centerpiece, designed in collaboration with Huguet Mallorca, grounds the space with texture and pattern while celebrating craftsmanship. A floating metal staircase connects the two office floors, positioned within a carefully pierced void that introduces natural light into the below-grade workspace.
