La Perla
This building is a tenant building housing a pachinko parlor with one basement level and four above-ground floors, with the top floor serving as the owner's residence. The site faces the south side plaza of Wako City Station, which handles 65,000 passengers daily, and is located on a corner lot adjacent to a city road.
At the time of construction, redevelopment was underway in the area south of the station. The building's design progressed with the vision that upon completion, it would face a plaza featuring groves of trees such as zelkova, magnolia, and dogwood.
The plaza-facing facade was designed as a vertical glass screen to serve as a landmark for the station area. This section features a 13-meter-high atrium extending from the basement level, with stairs connecting three floors further emphasizing verticality. The city road-facing facade emphasizes horizontality through openings and balconies that create a sense of lateral expansion. The southwest corner features glass blocks, creating a bright, enclosed space within.
The design intentionally allows the exterior appearance to change from various external viewpoints and fosters diverse relationships with the external landscape through openings as one moves within the building.
From the plaza, one can perceive the calm, subdued atmosphere created by the interior's white color scheme and indirect lighting through the glass screen. Together with its exterior, this design breaks away from the conventional image of pachinko parlors characterized by excessive colors and signage, proposing a refreshing pachinko parlor that is accepted by the local community.
