Since its inauguration in 1989, the Avicii Arena (formerly Globe Arena) has become one of Stockholm’s landmarks. It is Sweden’s national ice hockey arena, but also hosts a variety of concerts and other events. The arena’s renovation was necessary to adapt the existing structure to the requirements of a modern venue. The measures combine innovative construction techniques with the applicable heritage protection requirements.
The improvements include, among other things, the steel ring structure that supports the movable system of acoustic panels and the rigging system, as well as the gondola seats, the new spectator tiers, and the lounges, which customize the visitor experience and improve the view for the audience.
sbp was responsible for the modernization of the original supporting structure. The innovative movable acoustic system and the rigging grid are elegantly integrated into the inner ring as well as the outer compression ring. A filigree cable net structure carries the movable panels and all rigging elements and, thanks to a walkable net, creates a safe working platform for future event technology.
The modernization of the Avicii Arena is a central component of Stockholm’s comprehensive urban renewal and follows a sustainable approach to preserving and developing existing structures. Thus, the arena will continue to be an important venue for cultural, sporting and entertainment events, attracting millions of visitors every year.
