An Adaptive Learning Band
The new Erlaaer Schleife 2 primary school is located at the intersection of different urban contexts. Precisely aligned, it mediates between the neighboring developments and thus forms both the conclusion of the existing educational buildings along the U6 line and the starting point for the new urban expansion area “In der Wiesen Ost.” The school is conceived as a multi-folded, adaptive band whose bends create open spaces with diverse spatial qualities.

School in the Park
The eastern wing of the school aligns with the existing building and the adjacent residential blocks. By positioning this wing close to the existing school, an efficient connection between the two schools is established while at the same time creating a generous forecourt that opens towards the park to the south. The school grounds are entered through this forecourt, which is open to the park. The spacious foyer functions as a flowing space that connects all shared functions such as dining, the library, the multi-purpose hall and workshop areas.

A Shared School Garden
A key design idea is the creation of a generous, clearly defined central open space shared by both schools. By raising part of the open space onto the roof of the gymnasium wing, a spatial boundary is created that meaningfully separates it from the parking area and the U-Bahn embankment behind it. The dining hall with its south-facing terrace and the workshop rooms with their workshop courtyard both have direct connections to the outdoor areas.

Learning in Clusters
Two clusters are located on each of the upper floors, accessed from the generous circulation zones. The educational spaces are arranged on three sides around a multifunctional area, which acts as an extended learning zone and “marketplace.” This space opens generously to the outside through large glazing. An adjacent terrace functions as an outdoor classroom. The multifunctional area and the terrace together form a large, shared space for learning and gathering.
