Hudson Street, Loft

The owner of a small loft, we designed 10 years ago, acquired the adjacent unit, resulting in a new space more than double its size. Combining the two lofts required a reconfiguration of both spaces. As we were in a sense renovating our own work, we welcomed the idea of keeping some elements from the original design while adding and expanding others. The original bathroom was kept and now serves as a guest bathroom. The kitchen and appliances were relocated and expanded with additional storage. Further unify the two spaces, all services and finishes were reworked. New oak floors and plasterboard ceilings were installed throughout. New wood windows with stone sills and metal radiator grilles were added, extending a detail developed for the original space. With twice the area and essentially the same program, one occupant, we were able to create a sense of spatial variety by balancing public and private with open and closed spaces. Along the South facing windows a sequence of enclosed rooms with floor to ceiling sliding doors separate the sleeping areas and study from the open living and dining areas. The oversized door openings give natural light to the circulation space as well as to the service areas grouped against the public corridor.
