The AHS Otto-Preminger-Straße in Vienna is designed as an adaptive structure that forms a clear edge to Landstraßer Hauptstraße and creates a terraced landscape to the west. The clear edge forms the boundary of the new quarter to Landstraßer Hauptstraße. The terraced landscape facing inwards towards the quarter initiates an “alignment” and opening up to the new quarter. The creation of a terraced landscape also leads to an increase in open space. Due to the relative “narrowness” of the property, the creation of additional terrace areas as a supplement to the ground-level open space is a valuable addition to the open space available. The resulting terrace areas are very attractive for use, as they are located directly in front of and assigned to the school.

Maximized Open Space
In addition to the ground-level open space, terraces on each floor and the roof area are also available for sports. The roof area allows for flexible sports use. The terraces are generously sized and partially planted. The connected area of the auditorium, the multi-purpose room, the library, and the dining area is fronted by a level, contiguous open space that ensures flexible use of the interior and exterior space. The forecourt is covered and protected, offering high quality even in inclement weather.

Floating Structure in the Entrance Area
For the horizontal bracing of the building, the stair core in the area of the main entrance as well as the massive exterior walls of the gymnasium are utilized and supplemented by solid reinforced concrete shear walls at strategic locations. Due to the clear structural layout, the vertical load-bearing elements can be carried directly down to the foundations. This structural approach makes it possible to achieve the floating character of the building in the area of the main entrance.
