Schenefeld School Complex
In Schenefeld, the existing school complex on »Achter de Weiden« is being expanded with a modern new addition. The four-story building reinforces – both functionally and architecturally – the concept of two schools under one roof and creates new, modern learning and gathering spaces for both the comprehensive school and the high school.
The new building connects to the existing structure on the south side and, with an inviting welcome space, defines the school’s new public face. Both inside and out, the focus is on openness, orientation, and a sense of belonging – guided by the principle: as much togetherness as possible, as much separation as necessary.
The foyer welcomes users to the new building as a multifunctional meeting place, event venue, and connecting heart of the space. As a central hub for interaction, it links all functional areas on the ground floor and creates an open, lively atmosphere through carefully designed sightlines. Shared specialty rooms for music, art, crafts, drama, home economics, and technology are directly connected here.
On the upper floors, the learning areas are organized into clearly structured grade-level clusters. Each unit forms its own small »home« within the larger whole. Classrooms, specialized learning areas, and the respective cluster centers interlock to create a learning environment that facilitates both focused work and interaction and group work.
The red clinker brick façade echoes the materiality of the existing building, reinterprets it, and highlights specific areas through subtle details such as the Flemish bond. The modular construction approach enables rapid implementation and combines economic efficiency with sustainable building practices.
