Past and future meet in a new form at the Old grammar school Oldenburg. The four-story new building adds modern learning spaces to the school and allows the first-time complete barrier-free access to the historic building. Old and new engage in a dialogue that respects the historical substance while also making the transition to an inclusive educational landscape visible.
The new building replaces a former sports hall and frames the schoolyard with its clear cubature. With red brick and a dark roof, the new building references the existing structure, but complements it with its own independent, modern language. Generous glazing creates transparency and connects interior and exterior spaces.
Inside, the new building focuses on flexible structures. The learning spaces are designed to facilitate both collaborative work and individual study. The room layout is complemented by specialist rooms, music areas, and a full-day area with variable use.
The lowered integrated sports hall on the ground floor of the new building saves space and offers added value. Thanks to its central location, generous glazing, and views both inside and outside, the hall becomes a visible, lively part of everyday school life.
Delicate bridges and an elevator connect the existing and new buildings across all levels in a barrier-free manner. With green roof areas, photovoltaics, efficient technology, and durable materials, the new building meets high sustainability standards. The result is a future-proof building ensemble that promotes learning, interaction, and community.
