The environment of the research building is characterized by a heterogeneous, architectural structure without clear urban development references. Therefore the guiding principle of the draft was developed not from the urban context, but from the scientific use. The aim is to meet the special requirements resulting from scientific use by means of a differentiated but highly functional building structure. Due to minor structural interventions, however, an independent, unmistakable building block is created which is able to assert itself in its surroundings.

The structure of the individual floors of the main building is characterized by the unique Structure between the compact and strictly functionally organized laboratory areas and the adjacent office areas. Starting from the seminar and meeting rooms on the ground floor, the office spaces on the first and second floor are developed around an open air space with connected communication zones as well as along the laboratories. The laboratory structures are compact and open. All working areas in the laboratories are aligned to daylight.
